A landscape of a shoreline upon a city with mountains in the background and billowing smoke emerging from the peaks. Several figures wait on the shoreline with their boats while others walk around the beach. A cityscape of many different buildings close together is located off the shoreline.
Gabriele Ricciardelli was one of several Neapolitan artists of the eighteenth century who specialized in panoramic views of the city, catering to a growing market of visitors on the Grand Tour. This sweeping view of the Bay of Naples, with smoke rising from Mount Vesuvius in the background, depicts most of the city’s major monuments, including the Castel dell’Ovo jutting into the bay and the Castel Saint’Elmo perched on Monte Vomero above the city.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
