About this Work

The brilliant colors and decorative lines in this work are based on Madonna Adoring the Christ Child, a painting by Fra Filippo Lippi, a leading painter in Renaissance Florence. His original composition evokes a Nativity scene, but omits many typical iconographical details (such as Joseph and the shepherds) and places the scene in a wooded landscape rather than the usual stable. Lippi’s work inspired copies, including many by the artist or workshop that produced this painting. The artist’s abundant use of gold leaf suggests this version was likely produced for a wealthy patron.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
