About this Work

Representing guardians connected with the Tiv belief system, figures such as this one have not been made since the beginning of the twentieth century. While this is a slightly unusual example, marks typically found around the navel are here found around the Adam’s apple, the form, height and scarification motifs are characteristic of such Tiv figures.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
