About this Work

Although often classified as a Pop artist, George Segal’s work frequently addressed social justice or other moral issues that separated it from Pop Art’s commercialism. Indeed, through his practice of making plaster casts directly from family and friends, he created sculptures with a uniquely human element. Some of Segal‘s most powerful sculptures memorialize the victims of the Holocaust—including his own extended family in Poland. By contrast, Girl Washing Hair at Sink initially appears mundane. However, viewed through the lens of Segal’s commitment to human rights and dignity, the work signifies the beauty of daily life and its commonplace rituals.
