An ornament with two large white shells; one on the right and one on the left. The fiber is bordered in small shells and the fabric color alternates between red and dark blue.
Among the peoples of the New Guinea Highlands, the major art forms relate to the adornment of the body. These elements of adornment include ornaments, pendants, breastplates, headbands, and more. Both men and women used objects of adornment on a daily basis as well as those reserved for special occasions.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
