Royal hunter on horseback hunting deer and antelope with two cheetahs and bow and arrows.
In this hunting scene, a royal figure on horseback prepares to shoot an arrow from his bow as he pursues deer and antelope. One of his huntsmen releases two collared cheetahs that were trained to capture fast-moving ground game, a technique used by Mughal emperors. The flat green landscape fades into pinkish-purple mountains that divide the scene horizontally. The ruler’s distant fortified palace, at upper right, indicates the vastness of his territory and authority. This painting was probably collected in an album of paintings and calligraphy rather than part of a manuscript.
