A net-like open work fabric of cream cotton with four dancing figures. It is clear from the edges that this is a fragment from a larger work.

This open-weave gauze textile fragment is embellished with supplementary thread patterns that create the motifs, which have been outlined with additional thread. Likely part of a larger textile, imagery in this fragment includes figures that illustrate anthropomorphized felines. Although this cloth is from the Chancay Valley in the area of Peru’s central coast, the figures depicted relate to the Chimú style of the north coast.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
