This carved utensil may be an “apostle spoon.” Usually produced in sets of twelve, each spoon depicted one of Christ’s apostles at the tip of the handle. These spoons were especially popular during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Germany and England, where godparents often gave them as baptismal gifts. This spoon may have been produced in Germany, where boxwood was a popular medium.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
