About this Work

Known as master metalsmiths the Chimú worked in a range of materials. This necklace combines turquoise, gold, and copper and includes a central pendant depicting a male head.

Governed by a dynastic monarchy the Chimú were divided into two hierarchal classes; the elites, who would have worn such a necklace and the lower class which included the craftsmen and artists who would have made it.
