This exquisitely carved image of the Crucifixion once formed the right side of an ivory diptych used as an aid for private devotion. An increased supply of elephant ivory—obtained by Europeans through trade with Africa and Asia—inspired a golden age of carving in the material during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. The elegant, swaying curvature of the figures and the trefoil (a flower with cloverlike leaves) arch framing the crucified Christ exemplify the Gothic style.
