About this Work

Trained in painting and metalwork, Martin Schongauer pushed the artistry of the engraving technique to a new level, while he maintained a fairly traditional approach to the narrative. The portability and multiplicity of prints made his images an important source of inspiration for artitsts working in many media, including the great printmaker Albrecht Dürer.

The series consists of twelve sequential scenes depicting the final days in the life of Jesus Christ. This image, which includes a group of tormentors mocking Christ and Pontius Pilate entering the scene at the left, immediately followed another work in the Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art's collection, The Flagellation of Christ (EMA 2016.46).

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
