About this Work

This beautiful necklace continues jewelry fashions developed during the Roman imperial period: the increased use of colored gemstones and of lighter, more delicate chains. Openwork beads and clasps, however, help date the piece to the early Byzantine period. The arrangement of the gemstone pendants—which are reminiscent of Christian crosses—also helps identify it as belonging to Byzantium.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
