The rhythmic, rich decoration of this necklace is typical for the Late Classical and Early Hellenistic periods, a time when jewelry artistry was extraordinarily high in many areas of the Mediterranean region. Floral ornamentation and linear design are used to emphasize and contrast the varying structures of the round and pointed beads, highlighted originally by the bright blue of the small enameled discs.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
