About this Work

John F. Kensett is best known for his views of coastal New England, which he painted during the 1860s. This small study of a rocky promontory may have been painted around Newport, Rhode Island, or perhaps Beverly Beach, Massachusetts. Works such as Water Scene are often identified as Luminist. Luminist artists in the mid-nineteenth century sought to reveal the mysteries of nature through precise rendering and attention to atmospheric effects. The Luminist painters were influenced by German Romanticism and seventeenth-century Dutch landscapes.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
