A nude woman lies on her side with her legs crossed and knees pulled up toward her chest. Her left arm is draped over her head while her right arm is bent towards her torso. She is lying on a yellow cloth and is depicted in monochrome sepia shades.
Philip Pearlstein, considered the most important figure in the revival of representational painting during the 1960s, is particularly known for his renderings of the female nude. Although he initially worked in an Abstract Expressionist style, a visit to Italy in 1958 on a Fulbright Travel Grant awakened Pearlstein’s interest in traditional figurative painting. His images of nudes are characterized by unusual perspectives, radical cropping, and decorative background patterning. These devices call attention to the artificiality of the studio nude in Western painting by transforming the nude figure into an abstract form.
