A man holds the reins of a large horse whose head is turned to the right, its legs stamping. The backside of another horse is visible at left of the background.

This familiar rural scenario of a farmer struggling with his livestock (in this case a prize-winning Belgian draft horse at a fair) held a deeper meaning for Regionalist artist John Steuart Curry, who saw such works as an allegory of the historic struggle of man with nature. As he recalled, "It is my family's tradition and the tradition of the great majority of Kansas people…. Back of the historical allegory is the great backdrop of the phenomenon of nature, and to those who live and depend on the soil for life and sustenance, this phenomenon is God."
