Ogata Kenzan was pivotal in bringing the Rinpa aesthetic beyond painting with his innovative ceramic wares. Known for his abbreviated brushwork and rustic aesthetic, Kenzan formed and decorated this set of six ceramic dishes for serving tea sweets.

The shallow tray-shaped dishes were designed to look like they are wrapped in a hanging scroll painting. Kenzan coated each tray in white slip imitating a sheet of paper, which he decorated with seasonal flowers and plants using color underglaze enamels. He painted the exterior edges to emulate the silk border of a scroll painting, like the one displayed in this gallery.

Kenzan's ceramics enhanced the beauty of the food served in them and were in demand during his lifetime, contributing to the promotion and widespread recognition of Rinpa. He sometimes collaborated with his renowned older brother, Ogata Kōrin, who would paint the ceramics Kenzan produced.
