A woman presents a child to a priest in the temple. A group of figures is arranged behind the woman at the left. An arched wall forms the background of the scene.
This panel originally formed part of a retablo (a multi-paneled, architectural altarpiece) in an as-yet-unidentified Spanish church. It has been attributed to Felipe Vigarny, a Burgundian sculptor who settled in 1498 in Burgos, Spain, where he established a successful workshop specializing in retablos. Vigarny’s reliefs are distinguished by a sense of depth, the detailed rendering of textures and textiles, and naturalistic landscape backgrounds.
