A cross with Christ in the center, wearing a crown and leaning his head to his proper right. The cross is studded with blue colored glass or stones.
Used in religious processions, processional crosses would have been mounted to a staff, enabling congregants to view them. Luxury materials, including gold, precious gems, and enamel, enhanced the spiritual power of processional crosses. Following typical iconographical formulas, these crosses typically portray the crucified Christ in the center and saints at the ends of the lateral arms.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
