This statuette of the nude Aphrodite, goddess of love and beauty, is a small-scale adaptation of the famed cult Aphrodite by Praxiteles, made for the city of Knidos in the fourth century BCE. The type became very popular and was used as the basis for Aphrodite statuary throughout the Roman period as well. This work was cast from silver around a wax model that was melted away during the casting process, leaving the piece hollow.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
