This object is one of the oldest in this museum—and, indeed, pottery was among the earliest functional objects that human beings created. It also testifies to the universal human impulse for decoration. Love of pattern is evident in this piece. This pot includes images of boats and patterns that evoke the sea. The nautical reference reminds us that even in this distant time these cultures interacted with each other through the development of maritime trade.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
