Richly dressed in red, ermine-trimmed garments, two high-ranking donors, probably a married couple, kneel at the base of the much larger Madonna and Child in this panel, once part of a small altarpiece. Although not intended to be realistic, the sculptural quality of the figures foreshadows the naturalism of later Renaissance painting in Tuscany.
