About this Work

Celedon refers both to the name of the pale green glaze as well as the ceramic type. Although greenish glazes have a long history in China, the ceramics produced in the Northern and Southern Song dynasties are the ones most sought after by collecors in China and in the West. The elegant shape of this bowl is complimented by the ribbing or melon gourd molding of the body of the bowl. This example of celedon was probably made in the kilns of Longquan located in Southern China.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
