The painting depicts three figures standing in front of a gray sky with a classical temple in ruins slightly to their left. There is a man and a woman, with a small child standing between them. There are cows and other animals surrounding them but the composition is otherwise sparse.
In this scene, based on Genesis 21:14, Abraham banishes his Egyptian concubine Hagar and their son Ishmael, whom his wife, Sarah, considers a rival to her own son, Isaac. The Italianate landscape, complete with a classical ruin, is typical of both Aelbert Cuyp, a leading landscape painter in seventeenth-century Holland, and Hendrick Mommers, who spent some time in Italy. Over the centuries, the oil paint has become translucent, allowing us to detect the panel’s wood grain.
