A portrait bust of a smiling man with curly hair. He is wearing a jacket with a sash and a ruffled shirt. He is modeled in light brown clay.
Before he was appointed director of the Louvre Museum in 1802, Baron Vivant Denon (1747–1825) pursued a diplomatic career in Venice until French nationals were expelled from the city in response to the French Revolution. According to his correspondence, Denon had this bust made as a gift for his Venetian lover. Long thought to be the work of Joseph Chinard, recent research suggests another French sculptor, Barthélemy Corneille, produced this bust in Florence following Denon’s expulsion from Venice.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
