About this Work

The design on this Korean vase and other Asian celadon wares is created by incising into the body of the glazed vessel, filling it with threads of colored clay (most often white), firing, over-glazing and firing again. If the etched areas are not filled in with contrasting clay the glaze will pool into the incisions the making the design darker than the color of the vessel.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
