About this Work

Vessels have often been made in the shape of animals. In early Bronze Age Cyprus, duck-shaped pitchers were popular. These early examples are distinctively decorated with colorful geometric designs, and they effectively capture the basic characteristics of the waterfowl. They were probably used to hold perfumes or other luxury oils.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
