About this Work

Valencian pottery reflected Spain’s Islamic heritage well into the eighteenth century. Moriscos (Muslim converts to Christianity) comprised thirty-five percent of the population of Valencia prior to their expulsion from Spain in 1609. Afterward, Islamic ceramic traditions were carried on in Valencia by Christian artisans, who added their own aesthetic sensibility to their productions. Fantastic birds with small heads, long necks, and carnation-like tails were popular motifs for bowls and basins.
