About this Work

When Red Grooms moved to New York City in 1956, he made experimental films, participated in Happenings, and worked as an usher at Times Square’s Roxy Theater. Although the historic movie palace was demolished in 1960 for urban renewal, Grooms remembered its “magic” in this comic diorama. Viewers can look inside to see the audience watching a film (printed by Grooms on a Mylar strip operated by a side crank). Grooms broke down the barriers to traditional art media by creating large, walkable instations, films using his artwork as sets and props, and three-dimensional prints/sculptures.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
