A trip to Italy inspired this painting by Barry Gealt, who was a professor of painting in IU’s School of Fine Arts from 1969 to 2009. In this work, which evokes the often solitary nature of twentieth-century travel, Gealt’s wife, Adelheid (Heidi), Director Emeritus of the Eskenazi Museum of Art, sits alone in a train compartment, en route from Mantua to Florence.
Before he abandoned figure painting to concentrate on landscapes (around the mid-1980s), Gealt often used Heidi as a model. It is fitting, then, that Heidi Gealt herself has extensively researched how artists have portrayed their spouses and family members in their work.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
