Sue Coe gained international notoriety for her series Porkopolis—shown at IU in 1990—which (somewhat controversially) equated animal cruelty with the Holocaust. Seeing herself as a “graphic witness” to the horrors of our consumer economy, Coe created disturbing images of slaughterhouses, factory farms, and lab testing. In this print, animals reenact the 1948 Nuremberg Trials, with the Nazis on the right representing the meat conglomerates. In 1998, she began selling her prints online with part of the proceeds supporting animal rights organizations. Rather than merely observing societal ills, Coe endeavors to actively change human behavior.
