A vessel with a bulbous body and a slightly sloping and tapping neck to the rim that flares slightly. The entire vessel is covered with areas and drips of color, dark blue, brown, and a blueish/black.
A woman artist in Chewa culture made this storage pot and painted its surface using plant-based pigments. Markings on the painted surfaces of Chewa pots are sometimes individualized to the artist, and thus provide clues to the ceramicist’s identity. However, further research is needed on this particular pot to understand what the markings reveal about the ceramicist who made it.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
