About this Work

In 1942, Thomas Hart Benton produced a series of eight wartime propaganda paintings—The Year of Peril—that graphically depicted foreign enemies desecrating American lives, soil, and moral values. In addition to these horrific images, Benton produced patriotic prints that were sympathetic to the emotional toll that WWII was taking on America’s soldiers and their families back home. This work is a compendium to another print, Morning Train (Soldier’s Farewell), showing a young soldier leaving his small Plains town and his parents for the war.
