A transcontinental artist, Hiroshi Sugimoto embraces seascapes as a favorite motif. For decades, he photographed vast bodies of water in far-flung parts of the globe during different times of day and weather conditions. Using long exposures and a camera positioned high on a cliff, Sugimoto recorded slight changes (normally unperceivable) in the movement of the waves, light, and atmosphere. Avoiding any reference to a specific locale or human presence, Sugimoto’s elegant, minimalist compositions present nature as spiritual and primordial. This is the first example of Sugimoto’s work in our collection.
Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
