This image reflects the international perspective of the artist. Born in Finland and currently working in Sweden, Nina Korhonen exhibits throughout the world. Although this self-portrait was taken in the northwestern region of Spain, it recalls the universal themes of love, death, family, and memory that pervade her work. Part of an autobiographic trilogy, it suggests the loneliness and distance that she felt from her grandmother, who immigrated to the United States, and her own journey of self-discovery. The picture’s misty, otherworldly quality adds a sense of mystery and spiritualism.
