About this Work

Although this vessel was attributed to the Tusyan (Toussian), who live in western Burkina Faso, one very similar in form and decoration has also been documented among the nearby Karaboro. In either case, the ceramist was almost certainly a woman, and she worked without the use of a pottery wheel. The narrow opening and angled rim of this beautifully formed jar ensure that the palm wine inside will neither slosh out too easily nor evaporate too quickly. The textured surface, made with a roulette, enhances the form while ensuring a slip-proof grip.

Provenance research is ongoing for this and many other items in the Eskenazi Museum of Art permanent collection. For more information about the provenance of this artwork, please contact the department curator with specific questions.
