Garrett's appreciation of the blackened sheen and patterning of Zulu wares can be seen in this saggar-fired vessel, but he draws his inspiration from an extremely broad range of ceramic traditions. Although Garrett wrote his Master of Fine Arts thesis on Zulu ceramist Nesta Nala, he has studied the deep ceramic roots of South Africa's diverse population, including Zulu, Sotho, English, and Indian traditions.
