[1] McCrindle acquired the drawing no later than 1991, when it was exhibited that year as part of his collection at the Princeton University Art Museum (Frederick Broeder, Old Master Drawings from the Collection of Joseph F. McCrindle, Princeton: Princeton University Art Museum, 1991, cat. no. 75).

[2] An exhibition catalogue entry for the Rottenhammer drawing indicates that it may have been with the prestigious London dealer P.D. Colnaghi (est. 1760) for an unspecified period of time prior to its acquisition by Mr. McCrindle. McCrindle purchased numerous drawings from P/F. Colnaghi in the 1960s (Frederick Broeder, Old Master Drawings from the Collection of Joseph F. McCrindle, Princeton: Princeton University Art Museum, 1991, cat. no. 75).
