Pendant Depicting the Anastasis (Descent of Christ to Hell after the Resurrection)

This pendant consists of an oval rock crystal, which is carved in reverse intaglio and set within a complex frame of gold. It was probably worn on a necklace. The arrangement of the engraved figures identifies the scene as the Anastasis, an event that was believed to have taken place after Christ's Crucifixion. The triumphant Christ trampled the gates of Hell and raised Adam and Eve, the progenitors of all mankind, along with all other righteous souls.
