Textile Fragment with Bird and Flowers

This section of patterned material was probably part of a curtain or tablecloth. The presentation of subject matter combines naturalistic and ornamental approaches. The blue-green birds are presented in accurately observed profile, while the pink and red flowers and flower buds are highly stylized. These charming elements are arranged within a lozenge-shaped grid, which holds the design together within a geometric framework. All of the elements of the design were woven into the fabric, although a few details were embroidered.
