Ring with Engraved Gemstone with Asclepius

This gold ring with inset gemstone is a fine example of the signet rings that were used by men to mark documents, merchandise, and personal belongings. The images on the gemstone also conveyed social status and, often, personal interests and beliefs. This gemstone was engraved with an image of Asclepius, god of healing, and was probably worn to protect against illness.
