Vivien Leigh as Aurora, Goddess of Dawn (Vivien Leigh “Surrealized”)

Working as the staff photographer for the Old Vic Theatre, McBean captured most of the stars of the London stage. He got his start in 1936 photographing the cast of The Happy Hypocrite. The star was a young unknown named Vivien Leigh, whom McBean considered the most beautiful woman in the world and his favorite subject. In 1937 after seeing a surrealist art exhibit in London, he began a two-year series for Sketch magazine that depicted actresses in fantastic settings.
