Allegory of the Continents

Bernhard Rode illustrated the manual of iconography written by Karl Wilhelm Ramler in 1791, Allegorische Personen zum Gebrauche der Bildenden Künstler. The emblem book served as an inventory of allegorical images to which artists referred. Allegories of the continents were often associated with allegories of the four elements: air, earth, fire, and water, as seen in Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art’s related print, Allegory of the Elements (Eskenazi Museum of Art 87.26.3.98).
