Village Romance (Rural Tenderness)

Specializing in genre scenes, Adriaen van Ostade revealed the lives of the lower class with dignity and humor. A view through an open window was one of his favorite compositional devices, as seen in this courtship of a peasant couple. This technique offered the viewer a voyeuristic peek into another world, while assuring a safe social distance.
