Christ on the Mount of Olives (Agony in the Garden)

This print by the seventeenth-century Venetian painter and printmaker Carpioni reflects the emotional intensity and individualism favored by artists during the early Baroque period, as seen in the intimate depiction of Christ’s inner turmoil in the garden of Gethsemane on the eve of his crucifixion.
