Saint Anthony Reading (Saint Anthony the Hermit)

Most of Dürer’s representations of saints follow standard types with their traditional attributes. However, this depiction of Saint Anthony shows an unusual view of the solitary hooded monk seated outside of a sixteenth-century Alpine city, rather than a more typical scene of his temptation by demons in the desert. The emphasis seems to be on the triangular shape of the seated saint that is echoed in the rooftops and hillside.
