The Adoration of the Magi

The subject of Robetta’s print is freely adapted from Filippino Lippi’s Adoration of the Magi (1496), with the central figures reversed, the secondary figures altered, the angels added, and the landscape changed. The landscape, in the style of Dürer, emphasizes the distance from which the Magi have traveled. The Magi are shown as part of a large entourage, possibly suggested by the thirteenth-century Meditations, “Those three kings arrived with a great crowd and a noble retinue before the hut in which the Lord Jesus was born.” In Robetta’s print, the hut becomes a canopy.
