With Semaforo, Italian sculptor and designer Arnaldo Pomodoro evoked an ancient totemic monolith with the modern, industrial material of brass. Pomodoro usually conceives of his sculptures as basic, geometric forms, such as the cylinder or cube, and then gouges out sections to destroy the purity of the form, as in Semaforo.
