Ladder with Two Blacks and Two Whites

For Stalnaker, the ladder theme was a metaphor for personal growth as well as an exploration of formal qualities in his textiles. In 1993 he wrote of his ladder motif, “The form of these tapestries has developed from my interests in passages, personalities, and constructed music…. Ladders are used to climb from one level to another and I hope that…this form will suggest an analogy to life experiences…. I create complexly dyed color progressions to strengthen this suggestion of passage/movement.”
