Karl Martz, known for his experimentation with glazes, founded Indiana University’s ceramics program in 1945. Throughout his tenure at the university, he broadened his knowledge of and skills with clay, including at the Black Mountain College ceramics workshop in 1952 and in Japan, where he mastered traditional pottery techniques.
